PC Party Says Thank You, Farewell to Former Premier, Veteran MLA Kelvin Goertzen
WINNIPEG — Progressive Conservatives and Manitobans from across the province are saluting 22-year Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen after his announcement that he would not seek re-election in the next provincial election.
Goertzen has served the residents of Steinbach since first being elected in 2003, and won successive elections in 2007, 2011, 2016, 2019, and 2023. He leaves the political stage after serving as an Opposition Critic, senior Cabinet Minister, and Premier of Manitoba following Brian Pallister’s retirement in 2021.
“It is with a heart filled with gratitude that I announce today that I will not be seeking re-election in the next provincial election,” said Goertzen. “I could never have imagined that I would have the opportunities that I have been given in provincial politics. It is a testament to the greatness of Manitoba and the people who call it home.”
“I want to thank Kelvin for his years of dedicated service to the people of Steinbach and all of Manitoba,” said Obby Khan, Leader of the Official Opposition. “I revere Kelvin’s counsel. His insight and understanding of the political landscape are unparalleled.”
Goertzen noted that his announcement comes at a time of renewal, passion and new vision within the Progressive Conservative Party.
“I hope that my announcement today, more than two years into the current electoral mandate, gives those interested in seeking the PC nomination in Steinbach time to consider, time for the Party to plan, and time to transition with my successor,” said Goertzen.
The announcement comes after Premier Wab Kinew signaled last month that he would ignore Manitoba fixed-date election legislation and call an early vote. Kinew openly mused about calling an election last month, barely two years into his four-year mandate, then threatened to call an election in the spring if PCs disrupted his legislative agenda.
“Manitoba PCs must be on an election-ready footing,” said Khan. “Part of that process is determining which MLAs are going to fight an election campaign and serve Manitobans for another four years in an election that could come as early as the spring. After serving Manitobans and the people of Steinbach for over two decades, Kelvin will be missed. I consider him a trusted mentor and a dear friend.”
