Eliminating the PST On Haircuts Puts More Money in Manitobans’ Pockets

New PST exemptions on personal care services another way to make life more affordable after years of NDP tax grabs: PC Leader Brian Pallister

A re-elected Progressive Conservative government will provide even more tax relief to Manitobans by eliminating the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on personal care services such as haircuts, the Manitoba Progressive Conservatives party announced today.

“We are putting more money back in the pockets of Manitobans where it belongs,” said Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader, Brian Pallister. “The elimination of the PST on personal services such as haircuts will help reverse the endless nickel and diming taxation of the NDP.”

This personal services tax benefit will save Manitobans $7 million each year.

Every individual using these services will benefit. For instance, a customer who goes six times a year for a hair cut, wash and style that costs $110 each visit, annual PST savings would total $46.20. Someone who has frequent cuts, colour treatments, washes and styling, and a pedicure costing about $200 a visit would save $14 on PST each time and could save approximately $140 a year. A visit to a barbershop for a haircut and straight blade shave at a cost of $74 would save $5.18 in PST each and every visit.

“This tax benefit is one more way we are making life more affordable, particularly for women,” said Rochelle Squires, MLA for Riel who made the announcement on behalf of the PC Party. “This tax grab by the NDP was discriminatory because it mainly affected the services women use, while most men’s haircuts are less than the $50 threshold that was in place.”

While the tax cut will directly benefit consumers, it will also reduce administrative burden on small businesses like salon owners and nail treatment providers.

“This will help cut red tape for small businesses, which are the backbone of the Manitoba economy,” said Squires.

Wab Kinew’s NDP slapped the PST on personal services as well as home insurance in 2012. One year later, the NDP broke their promise to Manitobans and hiked the PST to eight per cent from seven per cent, costing Manitobans $325 million more every year.

The PC Party will make life more affordable for Manitobans by eliminating the PST on both home insurance and personal care services. Studies show that many Manitobans have less than $200 to spend at the end of each month. Every bit of tax relief helps.

“Our record is clear: we are lowering taxes and stopping endless NDP tax grabs. Wab Kinew wants to go back to the old days when NDP governments would give a haircut to Manitoba taxpayers every time they turned around. Manitobans wanting a hair cut shouldn’t have to pay an NDP haircut tax to do so.” said Pallister.  “We are the only team that is committed to providing new tax relief to Manitobans, and today’s announcement is just the start.”
