Meet Melanie
Meet Melanie. She's a single mother who was ticketed on Lagimodiere Boulevard for driving 78 km/h (two under the regular posted speed limit) through a construction zone with no workers present and improper signage.
May 13 was Melanie's birthday, and instead of getting her refund, it was also the day the NDP slammed the door on reimbursing unfairly ticketed Manitoba drivers.
$190 goes a long way in Melanie's household. She is part of a large group of Manitobans who have neither the time nor the money to take up a drawn-out court case to fight their tickets. She expected the government would be on their side.
Melanie came to the Manitoba Legislature yesterday to protest the NDP government's decision not to refund the money they unfairly collected from Manitoba drivers. She's hoping that if ordinary Manitobans like her keep up the pressure on the NDP, the government will be forced to give in and do the right thing.
Melanie's already signed the petition demanding the NDP issue her a refund, and knows that the only way we will see results is if the tens of thousands of other wrongly ticketed Manitobans do the same.
