Today the NDP members and the unions spoke, and Greg Selinger will become Manitoba’s next Premier. For Manitoba families, the stakes are high. Crime is out of control, wait times are rising and Manitoba is facing a big budget shortfall. We need a Premier we can trust to guide us through challenging times. Unfortunately, Greg Selinger does not fit the bill.
Breaches of trust
As Finance Minister, Greg Selinger knew about problems with the Crocus Investment Fund four years before the collapse. He told his cabinet colleagues that “by 2003, virtually no money will be available for new investments,” but as Finance Minister he said nothing to taxpayers, and thousands of Manitobans lost their hard-earned savings.
That’s not all. Mr. Selinger has also admitted that he knew about the plan hatched by NDP insiders to claim phony expenses that their election campaigns had never incurred. That triggered an illegal rebate of $76,000 of your tax dollars to their political party. But again, as Finance Minister Greg Selinger said nothing.
Can’t be trusted on the economy
Manitoba is also facing a big budget shortfall next year, and something must be done to close that gap. Greg Selinger has strongly suggested he will adopt a new Harmonized Sales Tax, which would impose a new tax on everyday items ranging from kids’ clothing to gas at the pump.
As if that isn’t enough, as a city councilor Mr. Selinger said he supports property and business tax increases. He paid only lip service to balanced budget while quietly running up Manitoba's debt, and some of his highest-profile campaign backers have even called for reversals in Gary Doer’s personal income tax cuts.
Help us get our message out
This isn't right. Greg Selinger cannot be trusted to lead Manitoba in challenging times. Progressive Conservatives will work hard to show Manitobans the true colors of the NDP in the next election.
