The Leader has appointed a Steering Committee to oversee the policy development process. Members of the Steering Committee come from the Board of Directors, Caucus, our membership and experts from different policy areas.
The Chairs of the Steering Committee are the Vice President of Policy, Kelly de Groot and MLA, Heather Stefanson.
How does it work?
Step 1: Team Building (Fall/Winter - 2008)
The Steering Committee will form Policy Advisory Councils ("PAC") with the responsibility to focus on one of the following areas:
• Economic Opportunity
• Environment
• Safety and Security
• Health, Education and Social Services
• Democratic Reform
The PACs will conduct research throughout the remainder of the calendar year.
Step 2: Summary of Research (Spring - 2009)
The research conducted by our PACs will be posted online for our members. The purpose of this research is not to define our policy position but to simply summarize what the experts are saying about different topical areas.
Some of the papers will contradict one another but it is important for our members to hear the full debate.
Step 3: Constituency Association Meetings (2009)
The Party will be encouraging our constituency associations to hold local meetings to discuss policy. Through these discussions the preliminary steps will be taken towards the development of resolutions to be considered at our Policy Convention.
Step 4: Regional Forums (Spring - 2010)
The Steering Committee will host Regional Forums to facilitate the development of policy resolutions. The time and location of the meetings will be sent to constituency associations and posted online.
Constituency associations will select delegates to the Policy Convention in the same manner as delegates are selected for the Party's AGM. The package of resolutions under consideration and rules for the Policy Convention will be sent to delegates.
Step 6: Policy Convention (Fall - 2010)
The delegates to the Policy Convention will vote on the resolutions. The resolutions that pass will be included in our Policy Declaration.
Step 7: Policy Declaration (Fall - 2010)
Our Policy Declaration will be posted online and made available to the public.
