Biography:
The first woman to represent Morris in the Manitoba Legislature, Mavis was elected as MLA for Morris in 2003. During her time in the Legislature, she has held numerous critic portfolios including: Culture, Heritage and Tourism, Multiculturalism, Family Services, Housing, Persons with Disabilities, Labour, Immigration, Small Business and the Workers' Compensation Board.
Since being elected, Mavis has also been a member of the all-party Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures Task Force and currently sits on the steering committee of the Legislators Forum: a bipartisan group of legislators from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Manitoba that meet annually to discuss issues of cross border mutual interest.
Before running for political office, Mavis was an entrepreneur, successful businesswoman, community volunteer, fitness instructor and retired laboratory technologist. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Winnipeg where she studied both private and public administration, economics, psychology and political science.
Mavis was the founder and former owner/publisher of the Headingley Headliner, a local newspaper serving a portion of the constituency of Morris. She is an accomplished writer and has received both provincial and national awards from the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association and the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.
Mavis has served on the executive of the Headingley & District Chamber of Commerce and was an active member of the Manitoba Community Newspaper Association.
Her hobbies include writing, golf and gardening. Mavis and her husband Wilf reside in Headingley. She is the mother of two grown sons.
